What to check on a certificate
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Legal name and facility address | The certificate should identify the actual laboratory, not only a group name or another branch. |
| Issuer, standard and certificate number | Confirm who issued it and the standard assessed. A management-system certificate should not be represented as medical laboratory accreditation. |
| Issue, expiry and current status | Check current validity and any suspension, withdrawal or change with the issuing body. |
| Scope or annexure | Check that the relevant test, method or discipline is covered. A laboratory may perform tests outside its accredited scope. |
| Collection and referral arrangements | Ask which site collects the sample, which site performs the test, and which accreditation applies to each part of the service. |
NABL and laboratory accreditation
NABL issues medical-laboratory accreditation certificates with a unique identification number, validity and a scope of accreditation. The scope matters: accreditation is not an unrestricted endorsement of every test or service associated with a brand.
Refer to NABL’s official information and laboratory directory to check the certificate supplied to you. Directory listings or third-party recognitions do not constitute evidence of current facility accreditation.
Questions you can ask before testing
- Which laboratory will perform my test?
- Is this test within that laboratory’s current accredited scope?
- What preparation and sample-handling requirements apply?
- Who can review a sample or report concern?
- What happens if the sample needs to be recollected?
Claims about accuracy rates, external quality assessment or test volumes should be supported by relevant evidence. For a service concern, use Grievance Redressal.
